Is It Good? Swamp Thing #34 Review

This month’s issue of Swamp Thing promises to wrap up a long building arc that has been going on in the background since February. I’m really excited to see where this goes. Is it good?

Swamp Thing #34 (DC Comics)

With The Wolf’s plan failing, Lady Weeds takes a much more different approach for defeating and taking out Alec Holland so they can regain control of the Green. It’s a far more… brutal, violent, and roll with the punches sort of method that provides a very deadly challenge for Swamp Thing. And by the end of it all, there will be a lot of bloodshed and people dead…

All in all, I’ve got to say — this was a very solid and fulfilling conclusion to this mini-arc and for the giant and long-running arc itself. It was powerful, tense, thrilling, and also rather heartbreaking by the end of it. Seriously, there are very genuinely sad and powerful moments in it that get to you, especially if you care about some of these characters. And the whole narrative ends on a hell of a cliffhanger to boot; I can’t spoil much, but you’ll certainly get a lot out of it if you are invested in the story as much as I am.

Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned monologue?

The writing by Charles Soule is top-notch. The storytelling is very strong, conveying a lot of power and emotion in it as I mentioned, but also flows very well from scene to scene and makes every single moment. The characterization is very strong, really bringing to life these heroes and villains through their actions and motivations. I especially enjoyed the difference in the way the Wolf and Lady Weeds execute their plans. The dialogue is pretty good, though the exposition can be a bit unnatural and awkward at points. The pacing is just right, however, so the dialogue never misses. Plus, as I stated before, the ending is really good and intriguing (culminating with a mysterious appearance). Overall, the comic’s writing is as fantastic as it always is.

The artwork by Javier Pina again looks amazing and really shines. The characters look great, the emotional elements of the story really shine due to how Pina’s artwork depicts the scenes and the characters, the action and violence are really stunning (though a tad static in some portions), the coloring is splendid, and the designs are excellent. Overall, the artwork here is as great as always and just as good as you would expect it to be.

Is It Good?

Swamp Thing #34 is a great closing issue to this long running arc, really hitting the audience hard with some intense and powerful moments while also featuring some riveting action scenes as well. The writing is strong, the heroes and villains are wonderful, and artwork is gorgeous — but then again, that is standard when it comes to this book. I look forward to where the next arc takes us and what the upcoming one-shot for Futures End has in store.
