Is It Good? Star Wars #20 Review

Dark Horse says goodbye to their main Star Wars series this month with issue #20. Is it good?

While Han and Leia work to get the Millenium Falcon space worthy (and flirt fight with each other), Seren sends an encrypted message that only the princess would understand. She requests an extraction on a planetary wildlife preserve named Oaka Prime. Unfortunately, IG-88 has tracked her there, as well.

“That Adobe update for my sniper targeting system better work…”

Our intrepid heroes arrive just in time to find the droid assassin about to take the rebel spy out. Even though the Falcon has received some new upgrades (courtesy of Mon Mothma), IG-88 is able to perfectly anticipate its every move. Fortunately, one of our heroes just happens to be a Jedi.

The story concludes with a nice bit of dialogue between Leia, Seren, and Luke. They are all people who have completely lost their place in this universe, but have found a new family and purpose through the Rebel Alliance. We also get a nice closing bit of snark from Han Solo… which is just the way it should be.

Is It Good?

To be honest, this wasn’t the type of issue I had initially hoped for. I wanted a big send off for this great series as the franchise closed out its legendary run at Dark Horse. Instead, we just got a good, solid story with an uplifting conclusion.

There was some great dialogue between Han and Leia, a menacing villain in IG-88 (who is severely underutilized in the movies if you ask me), and a new character that adds a fresh and poignant perspective to the struggle between the Empire and the Alliance. My only quibble with the plot was that the mystery about Seren’s loyalty was tossed aside a bit too quickly. But other that, this was a very well executed conclusion to the two issue tale…

…and the more I think about it, that might actually be the perfect way for Dark Horse’s main Star Wars book to end. It was sampling of what the company has given us week after week through all its books: Expertly crafted and gorgeously drawn tales from a wonderfully rich galaxy far, far away.
