Sad news: Hinterkind is coming to a close in May with Issue #18. It’s unfortunate, but honestly, I sort of expected it. It was a book not getting much critical attention, not really talked about it, and the sales figures didn’t look that good. So the book will be closing shop in this next three issues. Can the comic actually wrap up all of its plot threads and character arcs in the little time it has left and deliver a fantastic conclusion? Let’s take a look at one of its final issues together. Is it good?
Hinterkind #16 (Vertigo Comics)
Prince Parsifal, Prosper, and the others sneak into the Sidhe Queen’s bedroom to see how she is doing after the assassination attempt and figure out a plan on how to deal with the current situation. There, she reveals the truth of the situation, having gained the powers of a seer (the poison she was given had a 1 out of 10 chance of doing that, you see) and what they must do. She also drops a few other bombshells as well.
Well, being declared dead does make some people a bit presumptuous about your fate.
The comic here is really pushing a lot of storylines and subplots forward quickly so they can start wrapping up and to be honest, the developments here aren’t too bad for the most part (some feel natural enough to turn out like this given how they were built up in the past) and some of the reveals in this issue wouldn’t be that bad of a surprise overall. However, there is a plot thread at the end that does feel rushed and very coincidental with how this particular storyline is wrapped up. In general, considering there are only two issues left after this, I feel there are going to be some areas of the plot that won’t get much examination or exploration. For example, the big reveal with the fact that the surviving humans do have Sidhe blood within them and because of that, the queen will release all of the slaves after the war is over. Not a bad plot point at all and a good surprise, but because the story wraps up in two issues, we won’t be able to see how this new integration works. Do the Hinterkind accept the humans now, will the humans cause any trouble, etc. etc.
The writing is good though. The characterization is decent and works whenever it is there despite the very tight pacing the comic has now. Speaking of which, the pacing is much faster and forces the story to focus more on plot developments and making sure that every scene serves a purpose. There’s no more slow building or character focus stuff, just constant story focus material with a touch of characterization whenever there’s room for it. The dialogue is decent and it never feels too exposition heavy, despite what you might think with the story trying to rush things now. The ending is decent and considering everything that was revealed in the issue, it does provide a nice hook to keep you interested in the remaining issues. In conclusion, the writing here hasn’t slipped too much and I hope it can handle whatever plot point and character arc is left.
The artwork is fine like usual, though there’s not much too really say at this point here. The characters look fine, the layouts are fine but boring, the action is okay, and there’s on occasion a nice shot or bit of imagery. For instance, I rather liked how the art depicted the queen looking through Prosper’s body layer by layer until she saw the genetic code in her. Overall, there’s no real problem here with the artwork. I just wish it was a bit more exciting and interesting most of the time, especially with the big conclusion coming soon.
Is It Good?
Hinterkind #16 is stepping closer and closer to the end of the series. Many plot points and subplots are being wrapped up or being pushed towards their conclusion. Most of them are handled well, but there are bits that aren’t and sadly, some plotlines and character arcs will probably not get the attention the writer was hoping to give. Either way, the issue was still pretty decent and I remain interested in where this comic will be heading as it approaches the end of the line.
