I really enjoyed the last issue of G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel, as I have with the rest of the series thus far. It looked like the start of a fun new arc and interesting direction for where this series may be going. Let’s see if it can keep the fun going in this next issue. Is it good?
Ms. Marvel #14 (Marvel Comics)
Love is in the air as Kamala has fallen in love with Karman, the son of old family friend of hers. He seems so perfect and dreamy to her, and they share so many similar interests. Plus, he turns out to be an Inhuman like her, so they have even more in common with each other! Things seem like they’ll go swimmingly… though this seems like it is all heading for obvious twist and surprise.
Overall, another fun and enjoyable issue of the series. Being perfectly honest, you could have seen the plot twist coming a mile away due to how blatant and obvious it felt. Since that is the major part of the issue, it does end up making the issue feel like we’re killing time until it happens because what happens afterwards is what will be the most interesting thing to see. That said, it’s still pretty well handled and written story-wise that a younger generation will still really be into it for sure.
The writing is still excellent. The pacing and story structure are both nice, not interfering or taking away from the enjoyable experience. The characters are really lively and extremely well-characterized, leading to some great character moments with Bruno and Amair talking to one another. The dialogue is engaging, helping add more to the characterization and keeping the talking scenes engaging. The humor is still pretty great and has plenty of great bits here and there. All in all, even if the story doesn’t do much for you, everything else will keep you happy.
The artwork is still by Takeshi Miyazawa and it still really looks great. The layouts are nicely put together, the coloring is very appealing, and the small bits of action and detail look very nice. The major focus of the issue is character-related and Takeshi does a fabulous job with drawing these characters and scenes. You can really feel the emotion, the drama, and the humor in every scene or moment between the characters due to how well the body language and facial reactions look. It’s great stuff and I hope if there is ever another fill-in needed, he is called in for the job.
Is It Good?
Ms. Marvel #14 is another fine issue of the series. While admittedly predictable, the writing, characters, and artwork really make everything shine and capable of overcoming its problems. It’s probably not the best issue of the run we’ve had so far, but you’ll certainly come away enjoying this outing.
