The X-Files: Season 11 #8 Review

Here it is. The final chapter of IDW’s The X-Files: Season 11 (before the series is rebooted to be inline with the show’s new mythology).

Is it good?

The Plot

  • Future Mulder makes me sad, but it’s nice seeing Gibson play chess again.
  • I guess Possessed Skinner vs. Mulder is going to be a more civil debate than I thought.
  • Did Gibson make a mixtape?
  • A LOT of mixtapes?
  • Matthew Dow Smith (pencils) and Jordie Bellaire (colors) do such a nice job showing rendering possible futures that it apparently distracts everyone—including the omnipotent big guy.
  • Huh. Didn’t expect that.

Is It Good?

This was a hard issue to review. One the one hand, Joe Harris utilizes Gibson’s powers (and Smith/Bellaire’s art) to give us some really great character moments. On the other hand, the ending was more of a deus ex machina than a twist…

…although to be fair, Harris has consistently portrayed Gibson as a walking cosmic wild card, so the conclusion doesn’t feel cheap. Certainly not The Walking Dead Season Six finale cheap, at least. I also found the scene between Morales and Scully to be a overwrought, but that’s forgivable simply for the scene where Scully…eh, I won’t spoil it. Good/gruesome stuff, though.

In the end, this issue works as a pretty good microcosm for much of what I’ve both enjoyed and disliked about Harris’ X-Files run. The overarching plot may not be my cup of tea, but the moments between characters (especially the ones we haven’t gotten to see in over a decade) make the trip there enjoyable.
