Harley Quinn versus the Nazis…who ya got? Is it good?
Harley’s Little Black Book #4 (DC Comics)
So what’s it about? The DC summary reads:
Harley’s been to some very strange places in her bizarre life…but an alternate-reality time-travel trip is a new one even for her! Somehow, some way, Harley’s managed to find herself in the world of the Bombshells, a universe where female heroes have taken to the battlefield of World War II! And most unbelievably of all…she’s gonna meet herself?! Our heads hurt already.
Why does this book matter?
When you have 42 pages to fill centered on Harley Quinn you know you’re in for one complicated story and this issue is no different. Plus, we get double the Harley as she teams up with the DC Comics Bombshells. It’s just the right amount of zany to make it work!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Here we go!
And it does so smashingly! Once again, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti put on a show, making for a time-hopping jolly good time. Harley is whisked into the past and does a teamup, things go wrong, then they go right again, and along the way it’s a lot of fun to see how modern Harley exists alongside the Bombshells. Most of the humor generates from this area since Harley has a big mouth and isn’t aware “Friggin” isn’t in the WWII vocabulary. That’s also because Harley and the Bombshells jive well together. Her no-nonsense, go with the flow attitude might be strange to them, but they roll with it. That’s partly due to them thinking she’s their Harley, but that’s a plot point we won’t get into to avoid spoilers.
The writing team does well with the main plot, but what about a dream sequence? While some might argue it’s a five page short that’s there to pad out the book they are definitely wrong. It involves the Joker and…a big surprise. Joker’s a bit different and it’s possibly one of my top ten Joker appearances yet. Let’s leave it at that. Artist Joseph Michael Linsner draws this one and it’s gorgeous too.
Harley also comes face to face with history itself and again…avoiding spoilers as the surprise is a big part of why it’s so darn good. The writers and artists all do a fantastic job with this meeting and it goes down as a very iconic moment for Harley.
The art by Billy Tucci is quite nice too. He draws the flashback scenes and they have a good amount of detail and give Harley plenty of spunk. Flavioano draws the now scenes, and they have the look and feel of the main Harley Quinn book–cartoony and fun. Overall the art team pulls this together nicely.
It can’t be perfect can it?
Common with most Palmiotti and Conner scripts, this is a very wordy comic. There are whole panels that seem to add little to the script and you have to wonder if it could be more streamlined. It doesn’t hurt the story so much as make it feel slower than it needs to be.
Never time travel when on a toilet.
