Godzilla: Rage Across Time #3 Review

Despite having Big G’s name on the title, Godzilla: Rage Across Time #3 doesn’t actually have him in it. That’s a bit of a bummer, but at least we still get some monster action in medieval England.

Is it good?

Observations

  • Plague masks make everything creepier.
  • King Edward III is in serious need of a Xanax.
  • Pro tip: Don’t pick up dead rats, especially if you’re in the middle of the Black Plague.
  • Sorry, buddy, but that’s not a dragon.
  • THAT’S a dragon.
  • Ummm…how did they end up in England?
  • Mothra never gets enough respect.

Is It Good?

Not really.

While the art by Hugo Petrus is beautiful, his paneling makes the action sequences look tangled and incredibly hard to follow. (I do love how he draws Mothra and Megaguirus, though).

And just like last issue, we are saddled with a group of mostly unlikable characters who act like a bunch of douchebags while everyone waits for the monsters to show up. I would have much rather have learned how/why Mothra ended up in a temple on the other side of Asia than watch a bunch of bickering soldiers engineer their own demise.

The issue’s ending is somewhat poignant, but ultimately falls flat due to our lack of familiarity with (and affection for) the characters driving the narrative. Not helping matters is that the overarching plot of the series (taking place in the present) is starting to feel completely pointless. After such a great opening chapter, Godzilla: Rage Across Time has taken a sharp turn for the worse.

Let’s hope that Godzilla’s return to the series (which has his name on it) leads to a more enjoyable jaunt through time.
