The sheer amount of spectacle Dan Slott and Mike Allred have given us with this series is uncanny. The character and the art that comes with it is a joy and Silver Surfer’s budding relationship with Dawn is endearing and romantic. Let’s check out the latest issue though, is it good?
Silver Surfer #7 (Marvel Comics)
So what’s it about? The Marvel summary reads:
“The Infinite All-In” Norrin and Dawn are back out in space and back in trouble! While at the universe’s slickest space casino, the Silver Surfer may be gambling away more than he thinks. The stakes have never been this cosmic!
Why does this book matter?
The imaginative ideas in this series should not go unnoticed. Slott has had plenty of good ones so far, the more cosmic the better, and it’s fun to see him stretch his legs in the cosmic end of the Marvel pool. Meanwhile, Allred has delivered his customary unique cel-shaded style with beautiful colors by Laura Allred. This is fun comics, folks.

And this issue continues the joy of the series nicely. Silver Surfer’s genuine desire to do good shines through, with a fun montage of he and Dawn going on a planet to planet adventure. He’s attempting to show her a good time, but as soon as she realizes it’s safe fun she asks him to ramp up the danger. The relationship they have is quite realistic, and reminiscent of many couples I know of who push each other to do more and more until maybe they’ve gone too far. They’re a very cute couple and when their adventure takes them to a cosmic casino things get really interesting.
Dan Slott once again infuses this series with fun ideas. From the planets they visit in the beginning to the very unique things one can gamble in the intergalactic casino — you’ll find yourself grinning from end to end. Slott understands how to capture the wonderment of the cosmic universe and it’s very apparent here. It’s also quite clever how he resolves this story and it’s fun to see how Dawn and Silver Surfer are loving every minute of it. Though very much a done in one sort of story, Slott has a mysterious character pop in at the beginning and end to question their antics and create a sense of danger.
Mike Allred continues to do fantastic work. I wonder if this guy can ever be given an idea and not make it visually striking and easy to understand all at once. There’s plenty to love in this issue but one of my favorites is the dress Silver Surfer gives Dawn to wear; it has the black cosmic spots shifting about that remind us she’s not in an average casino at all. The colors are great too, with some cool story elements that play around with them (like making Silver Surfer gold) and it always pops.
It can’t be perfect can it?
There’s one panel where Dawn looks strange as she yells “Gyah!” She’s supposed to look in shock, but her bottom teeth run too wide across her mouth and look strange. It’s a minor thing for sure, but it caught my eye.
Fun!
Is It Good?
Silver Surfer is so much dang fun you’d have to be a scrooge (or a Mad Titan) to not love it. Issue #7 takes the usually heavy world of the Marvel cosmic universe and makes it relatable, imaginative, and downright joyful.
