Logan gets a warning from a Sentinel that Jubliee has gone missing. When he goes to her apartment and finds baby Shogo there alone, he sets off for Romania, her last known location, to see what he can find. And what he finds is the Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D., their paranormal containment unit. One of their members has also gone missing, and it turns out that she and Jubliee have something in common: they are both vampires. And that’s when the HCs reveal who they think is responsible for the disappearances, none other than Dracula himself.

Is It Good?

I haven’t been reading Old Man Logan, but when I heard that this issue started a new arc with art by Filipe Andrade and colors by Jordie Bellaire, I figured this was a great time to jump in. I’m a huge fan of these two artists, and I was not disappointed. Andrade used the more sketchy, looser side of his style, which fits the lighter and funnier tone to the story, but I also loved his use of thick lines and shadows once Logan reaches Romania.

Bellaire’s colors do a major amount of work setting the tones for each different setting, giving the Romanian scenes a much darker and muted palette. I did have to re-read the action sequence with the initial Howling Commando attack a couple times, because the dark palette and unusual panel layout made it hard to figure out what was going on, but I think that actually works with the story, since Logan is just as confused as to who the hell is smashing him from above.

Jeff Lemire does an excellent job with the tone of the story, letting what on a basic breakdown could seem silly become the basis for a really fun read. This is a great comics story and even though I’m a newbie to the All-New All-Different X-Men and Old Man Logan, this story got me really excited to keep reading.

Lemire, Andrade, and Bellaire make a fantastic team and I think this is a going to be a great arc.
