Dr. Frankenstein’s monster apparently lives in outer space and in the last issue did some heavy handed work to bring in a criminal. Unfortunately for him, Lois Lane was in the company of said criminal which has in turn brought Superman into the fray.

So what’s it about? The summary reads:
“SINISTER PURPOSE” part two ! Here comes the Bride and her four arms are loaded with weapons. And on what side of those guns is Lois Lane going to be? The mystery of one of the citizens of Hamilton will be exposed with monstrous consequences for all.
Why does this book matter?
The last issue of Superman was the first in the new story arc and opened with quite a bang, quickly establishing a unique, engaging narrative. Add in the impressive art by Doug Mahnke and Superman #13 could be an action packed romp we won’t forget.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Love that blur.
Patrick Gleason and Peter J. Tomasi write another entertaining issue from beginning to end, progressing the plot in a similarly slow manner, but making sure to include the firecracker personality of Lois Lane in the process. It appears strong female characters are going to be a staple of this story arc; we get quite a few well written bits of dialogue from Lois as she proves she’s heroic in her own way and then Frankenstein’s monster’s wife shows up to throw a wrench into everything. The writing team does well to keep the characters dynamic and interesting and there are subtle references to their relationships that makes matters even more delectably complex.
Tomasi and Gleason wrap this issue up with a nice juxtaposition between Frankenstein’s monster and his bride with Superman and Lois. Though their lives are different the message of being grateful for what you have and have built together comes off in a strong way.
The art by Doug Mahnke continues to be a lot of fun yet never loses sight of the gravity of the situations; there are some cool blur effects used too (like in the image above) and Superman’s laser eyes look on point throughout. There is an emotional moment featuring plenty of sideways glances and facial expressions that is pulled off very well, also. I appreciate the inventive detail in the alien criminal’s face which helps make it look realistic.
It can’t be perfect can it?
Seeing as this wraps up a two issue story arc it’s clear there wasn’t a lot to this. It’s about men confronting the women they love and how it’s decidedly different, yet the love is just as strong on both ends — that message is clear. That said, if you’re expecting a fight comic, or something that will be remembered for ages you’re out of luck.

Is It Good?
Superman #13 wraps up a fun two issue story arc that puts the ladies at the forefront of the stories. They’re strong, bold, and compelling as hell which makes this issue a lot of fun if you dig character work.
