All-Star Batman #5 Review

This is it! The final issue of All-Star Batman’s inaugural story arc. Harvey Dent’s soul hangs in the balance while Batman, Bruce, and a whole lot of other people (both bad and goodish) surround them on all sides.

  • KGBeast + A big crowd of people dressed up like extras from The Purge = Not Good.
  • Always a giant poker chip handy when you need one.
  • Someone should probably tell Penguin that KG Beast isn’t mentally stable. Like, at all.
  • all-star-batman-5-2

  • Sometimes I feel like Duke is the only reasonable person in this book.
  • Poor Harvey ☹
  • I immediately retract that sentiment.
  • Can’t forget about KG Beast when you’re resetting and/or reestablishing the status quo.
  • Now that’s a cliffhanger.
  • Heh.

The Verdict

There’s a lot to like here, particularly the way Snyder and Romita Jr. combine for some great storytelling moments.

Unfortunately, the resolution to this story arc is a bit of a letdown. Of the five major questions/narrative threads resolved, only one was at all surprising. The others were either completely expected or painfully disappointing.

That being said, the issue is still a lot of fun. I especially liked how relentless KGBeast was in his pursuit of Batman along with the opportunity to create some bloody chaos. And just like the last few issues, Duke continues to slowly win me over to Batman having a sidekick (just as long as its him).

If you read all of the issues in this story arc back-to-back, I think you’ll agree that the journey was a whole more entertaining/interesting than the destination. Considering the road trip theme running through it, that just might be exactly how Snyder planned it.
