You’re probably asking yourself, “Hey isn’t season 3 of Rick and Morty supposed to be out already?” Well calm yourself, because Oni Press’ comic series has helped keep the peace with this wildly funny series. We check out the latest issue out this week–is it good?
Rick and Morty #22 (Oni Press)
So what’s it about? The summary reads:
Doofus Jerry is the REAL PIECE OF WORK, MAN. And, somehow, Rick’s Achilles heel. He can’t figure out how to beat the dude! Well, if ONE Rick can’t solve your Jerry Problems maybe all of them can? Can The Council of Ricks stop Doofus Jerry’s before everyone becomes—oh god, no—conquered by a Jerry?
Why does this book matter?
Aside from it being the only way to get Rick and Morty stories, Kyle Starks is writing fantastic scripts for this show over and over. CJ Cannon has been a mainstay that’s captured the look of the show to a T. Then you have backup creator Marc Ellerby delivering awesome done in one stories every issue. It’s a great team and we should know, we interviewed Kyle and the team just recently.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
God damn cats!
The rise of Jerry continues and Rick is his bitch! Starks continues to write Jerry in a maniacally evil sort of way. Even I’m scared of him. It’s fun to see Rick and Morty so weak when they’re usually kicking ass. This issue ties in the many Ricks of other dimensions well and builds up the fear of the Ricks so that when Jerry is finally taken down, because duh Rick can’t lose, it’ll be triumphant. Along the way there’s some good humor, like a Golden Girls joke that’s a bit disturbing.
The backup is a fun one as Rick attempts to help Morty with his girl issues. It backfires, of course, but it’s fun to see Rick comment on another world where Morty is a real bastard. Ellerby draws a good issue as always, with some awesome burping of Rick that’s gross and a tad different.
CJ Cannon does a top notch job as well. It looks just like the cartoon and should satiate fans. The facial expressions of evil Jerry and good Jerry go a long way in conveying their demeanors.
It can’t be perfect can it?
It’s not the funniest issue of Stark’s run, but it has its moments. It’s hard to top what he did when he first took on this series as the jokes flew fast and wild.

Is It Good?
The evil Jerry plot thickens while this issue serves as a more serious but well written story. It’s not quite filled with the amount of laughs I’d want, but all in all it’s good storytelling that could easily be an episode of the show.
