Spider-Man 2099 #21 Review

Last issue, Tyler Stone left a top-secret medical facility with Miguel’s girlfriend, who just so happened to be pregnant with their child. I’m guessing that’s going to be the driving force of this issue.

Observations

  • …or not.
  • At some point, Cap 2099’s alter ego has got to notice that her clothes are getting stretched out constantly.
  • Electro 2099 may be a homicidal maniac, but at least he’s admirably persistent.
  • “Do you have shields on your feet?”
  • Taxis are still better than Uber or Lyft for quick getaways…
  • …most of the time.
  • Never underestimate the power of a couple wooden palettes.
  • Also something you shouldn’t underestimate: An angry and determined Miguel O’Hara.

The Verdict

As usual, Sliney’s art is fantastic. This is not an opinion, but a fact on which there will be no debate.

The story? Surprisingly, it’s not very good this time.

Don’t get me wrong—Peter David writing just about anything means that at the very least the dialogue will good. But it feels incredibly jarring (and more than a little disappointing) to go from the Tempest storyline to something that so different in scale and tone. We also get a fight scene—or a series of skirmishes—that don’t really get good until Miguel shows up at the very end.

That being said, the last page of the issue does provide a tantalizing look at what could turn out to be one of the best storylines of the series to date.
