This crossover comic is exactly why crossover comics exist. You want something that takes two completely unrelated properties, mashes them together for a tremendously tenuous reason, sends them on some zany antics, and ties things up in a neat little bow in time for a bonus back up story? Then look no farther than Booster Gold/Flintstones, written by Mark Russell with Rick Leonardi on pencils, Scott Hanna on inks, Steve Buccellato on colors, and Dave Sharpe on letters with Michael and Laur Allred doing the main cover. It’s pretty damn goofy, and exactly what a crossover should be.
Booster Gold/The Flintstones Special (2017) #1 (DC Comics)
The story opens on Booster in future Gotham, where his Tinder date (don’t worry; we’ll still have Tinder in the year 2472. Our legacy is secure) gets spoiled by an alien invasion. Booster, of course, hops in his time machine to go fix things at the source. And wouldn’t ya know it? The first appearance of these aliens are in Bedrock, and when Booster crashes on top of the alien’s head and Dorthys the alien to death he winds up needing help from Fred and the gang to get home. Antics ensue. Zany, zany antics.
At this point, I think it’s worth mentioning that this is not the best comic book in the world. The premise is thin, the dialogue is only okay, the art does a perfectly serviceable job; the whole affair is relatively threadbare from an objective stand point. But that’s not the point, right? You didn’t come here for a thoughtful examination of the Butterfly Effect or how primitive cultures would be affected by future technology. You wanted to know if putting an a-----e time traveler in with Betty Rubble is as crazy as it sounds, and I’m here to tell you yes, yes it’s bananas.
While Russell and team may sacrifice sequential art nuance, they never lose sight of what the priorities of a project such as this is, and consequently, for a gimmicky one-shot annual they execute some pretty funny gags.
That Crime Alley cut out is pretty bleak, but I mean, Frank Miller was never thought of it, so he can suck it.
And Leonardi, Hanna, and Buccellato do pretty well capturing both the world of Booster Gold and the recently face-lifted Flintstone clan. They’re able to bounce between the two time periods comfortably, without any jarring or obtuse panels. Plus, their alien design is straight out of the classic Flintstones carton in a really great way and adds even more fun to the affair.
Then, in the back up story, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and Pier Brito introduce us to what they have in store for George and fam in their upcoming Jetsons ongoing. I don’t know if I’m quite sold on Brito’s new designs of the world (though I suppose that is what Geroge’s hair would look like on a real human), but I do kinda love the twist at the end. The preview does its job and has piqued my interest, so I’ll be curious to see what that team has in store for the main title.
