Dragon Ball Super: Episode 5 “Showdown on King Kai’s World! Goku vs. Beerus the Destroyer” Review

At last! Goku vs Beerus. The episode we have all been waiting for. This is bound to quench our thirst for a good fight that hasn’t happened yet in the series. Or is it?

Battle of Gods arc – Episode 5/14

We pick up where we left off with Beerus and Whis arriving on King Kai’s planet and Goku scoping them out. We are again reminded that mortals (or at least Goku in this instance) can’t feel a god’s power level. King Kai is clearly nervous around Beerus, a trend that is sure to continue with other people we consider powerful. After some small talk between Beerus and King Kai, Beerus calls out Goku to come meet him.

Although Goku is often disrespectful to anyone, he appears especially callous when talking with Beerus. I wonder if they upped his disrespect in the English dub because I don’t recall him being this bad in the original Japanese subtitled version, but I may be mistaken. Beerus questions Goku about the “Super Saiyan God”, of which Goku knows nothing about.

Goku then does the Goku thing and asks Beerus to demonstrate his power in a “sparring match” before Beerus heads off to Earth to talk with Vegeta. Due to the brashness of Goku (which King Kai is worried would end up destroying them all), which Beerus has never before seen in his hundreds of millions of years, he allows Goku to attack him.

Goku then transforms into a regular Super Saiyan to start with and is unable to even touch Beerus.

When Beerus threatens to leave, Goku powers up to Super Saiyan 2. But he is still too weak to even touch Beerus, further disappointing the God of Destruction. Goku asks for Beerus to fight back, which Beerus agrees to, if Goku is able to prove it worth his while. Finding that Super Saiyan 2 is still not working after several more attempts Goku goes full on Super Saiyan 3 (one of my favorites).

And again, they go toe-to-toe. Goku is finally able to hit Beerus, but in this instance it is just Beerus blocking Goku’s punches. An interesting thing that happened here, is that during one of Goku’s attacks, his feet moved on their own, preventing Beerus from outright destroying Goku. It appeared that Goku’s body knew when to dodge, even if his mind didn’t. Following this, Goku resumes the offensive only to finally tick off Beerus enough to fight back.

And in two hits, the battle is over.

Following this Beerus leaves to go question Vegeta about the Super Saiyan God.

Vegeta by this point has joined Bulma’s birthday party on the boat. King Kai contacts Vegeta to warn him about Beerus. This is probably the best interaction of the series so far, with Vegeta’s sarcastic comments and King Kai’s snappy responses.

Goku awakens at the end of the episode, wondering how best to beat Beerus in a fight, but still being clueless as to how to do it.

Battle of Gods Movie Link

Battle of Gods to Super Time Correlation: ~20 minutes 30 seconds to ~30 minutes 30 seconds

This part of the movie is almost identical to the TV show, with even much of the dialogue being identical when Goku and Beerus’ first meet. One item of note: it is interesting that in the movie, Beerus does not give himself an age like he does in the episode (hundreds of millions of years old as opposed to living a very long time).

In the movie Goku doesn’t play around like in the episode though. Here he goes straight through Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 to Super Saiyan 3. But in the end Goku is defeated after two very similar hits. The only other difference is that when King Kai contacts Vegeta, he hasn’t gone over to the party yet, and King Kai ends up interrupting his training to warn him.

Episode Thoughts and Feelings

Finally we get to a fight. After four excruciating episodes, some I could easily have done without, we get to Super Saiyan 3 Goku fighting Beerus. Okay, that’s an exaggeration–we have Goku, running around punching the air for 20 minutes while nothing else much happens. Interesting though that the episode takes its cues from the movie, almost mimicking it exactly in parts. The only thing extra we got in the episode was an extended scene of Goku fighting at Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2.

Overall it wasn’t too bad of an episode. Super Saiyan 3 always gets my blood pumping, even if it isn’t used very well. I just love the design. At the end of the episode, we are left with one resounding question: if a Super Saiyan 3 can’t even land a punch on Beerus, what can beat him?
