The Europa is crashing, Zula and Hollis are about to bail out into the ocean, and the Weyland-Yutani Corporation is not happy with their recent shenanigans.
Welcome back to earth, ladies.
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Eduardo Francisco
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Observations
- SPLASH DOWN!
- …maybe?
- Unless I see Davis’ body liberally doused in android blood/warm milk, I refuse to believe he’s gone.
- These flashbacks (?) are pretty awesome.
- At least the medical and legal personnel are being nicer to Hendricks than the soldiers are.
- Are we really going to go there with the soldiers?
- Yep. Weyland-Yutani still sucks.
The Verdict
Ugh. What just happened to one of my favorite books?
Aside from artist Eduardo Francisco’s thrilling opening sequence (and some fantastic looking flashbacks/nightmares), Aliens Defiance #11 is by far the weakest issue in the otherwise stellar series.
Maybe I expected too much. Weyland-Yutani has always been portrayed as an organization with a disconnect between their resources and critical thinking skills that would give M.A.D. from Inspector Gadget a run for its money. Perhaps Brian Wood has more layers that will be added later, but as of right now, they’re as monolithically stupid and evil as ever.
Also, even though they are probably hired contractors/mercenaries, I’m once again reminded of why I hate the Broken Soldier Trope. If these guys are just hired guns, then I doubt they’d care so much about some Colonial Marines dying who they probably didn’t know. If they are soldiers, however, then I still don’t think their bitterness toward Hendricks wouldn’t be expressed in such a cartoonish manner.
On the plus side, it was pretty heartbreaking to watch Hendricks be in so much pain after everything she just went through. Otherwise, though, the primary emotions this issue made me feel were anger and annoyance. Let’s hope that Wood can get Aliens: Defiance back to its usual level of quality next month.
