Greg Rucka’s more serious take on Wonder Woman gives way to a fresh start from DC Super Hero Girls writer Shea Fontana and DC Bombshells artist Mirka Andolfo. If you were worried that their stewardship of Wonder Woman would be too radical a departure, “Heart of the Amazon” Part One can put those worries to rest.
Here’s the official synopsis from DC Comics:
Writer Shea Fontana (DC SUPER HERO GIRLS) steps in for a new story! Wonder Woman finally takes a moment to catch her breath and attend a friend’s wedding…but unfortunately, horror’s followed her even there!
The story kicks off with Wonder Woman in a real-world situation: helping refugees at a United Nations camp in Greece. When she returns home, Diana is told to take a break from missions and she hopes to going to the wedding of Etta Candy’s brother will help out.
There’s also a flashback sequence on Themyscira in this issue that connects to Diana’s current situation. As a young girl, she believed that one needed to be strong and not attached to frivolous things like dolls. She equated the heart of a warrior to the heart of the Amazon. Are they really one in the same? It looks like Fontana will look to answer that question in the story.
Of course, it’s pointless to compare Fontana to Rucka without seeing the full picture of where this story will go. It’s clear that Fontana is looking to define Wonder Woman’s place in a modern setting, rather than focusing so much on her roots to Greek mythology. In other words, Rucka spent the first 25 issues of Wonder Woman defining her past and future writers will push the character into the present. But one has to hope that a strong villain is in the works for this story, since there’s none present here.

Andolfo’s work also helps Fontana’s cause. Unlike the artists on Rucka’s run, Andolfo has a personal style that fits this brighter Wonder Woman story. Fans of her work on Bombshells will be happy to see her work on the standard Diana.
“Heart of the Amazon” is only going to continue through #30, since James Robinson and Carlo Pagulayan are taking over for a six-month run in late September that will introduce Wonder Woman’s long-lost brother. You’ll want to enjoy Andolfo and Fontana’s work before that inexplicable twist comes along.
