Go Go Power Rangers #1 starts right from the beginning after the Teenagers with Attitude first get their powers. This is an exciting issue with more than enough action and adventure to go around. There is no better way to introduce these characters in a new light than how it was done here. The Power Rangers start their new lives as super heroes and struggle with their personal lives juggling saving the world with making it home on time for homework. You really get to see it all in this issue and if you’ve never read or watched the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and have no knowledge of the characters then this is a great start for you.
The issue opens very strong with the Power Rangers standing victorious after their first battle with Rita’s right hand man Goldar. Right away you notice that the Power Rangers don’t even know what to call their Zords which is pretty neat to see and it really gives you the sense that it is a prequel comic and they are new to this. As I said, this book mainly focuses on the Power Rangers themselves and not the villains but that doesn’t harm the actual story at all because this is the first issue and since it’s a prequel we don’t really need a brand new introduction to Rita.
The art in the entire issue from start to finish is beautiful. The character designs are great and resemble the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show to a tee. The choices for the outfits are great and there isn’t any overuse of the characters’ respective colors on their attire (which was an annoying aspect of the original show). There is a perfect amount of color in each page that really brings out the best of all the art in the issue. You can really see the hard work everyone out into this issue. The art, the story, the colors and even the word bubbles stood out.
The story itself was a little scary jumping into because I’ve already been so devoted to the current Power Rangers comics so when you hear the word “prequel” it’s hard to not be skeptical because what else can you say about the team that we don’t already know? Well I couldn’t have been more wrong because this issue has it all. The story was so intriguing and shed some new light and details on these characters. A new character, Matthew, is introduced as the sixth friend who’s not a Power Ranger and ends up being an excellent touch. And having him date Kimberly was a huge shock because we’ve only ever seen her with Tommy (and some mystery guy she fell in love with off camera but we won’t get into that) and I can’t wait to see how the storyline develops.
