In a story called “Out of Time,” the Green Lanterns of Earth are certainly on the right planet — one that’s 10 billion years off from their timeline. Watch as they train the first Green Lanterns ever to wear the ring (while they are still pretty green themselves).
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
“OUT OF TIME” part three! The death of one of their own shakes the new Green Lanterns’ resolve. Simon and Jess step up to lead the charge that may be their only hope of ever returning home to their own time.
Why does this matter?
While purists could be annoyed, I rather like what Sam Humphries has been doing with this series. Over the course of these 29 issues he’s made a place for Simon and Jessica that’s more fulfilling and interesting than ever before. On top of that, he’s given us new details on the foundation of the Green Lantern rings, which is pretty darn cool.

What the heck is Eduardo Pansica doing to his art?! Seriously, this issue is jaw droppingly gorgeous. There are double page spreads that are epic and awe-inspiring and the quality is pretty damn great. On top of all that, he’s drawing multiple characters all different and interesting in their own right. This is a good looking book and it opens with a full page splash that’s drool-drippingly good (just look above!). The quality of art is also due to Alex Sollazzo who gives the Green Lantern rings a nice glow and helps make Earth of 10 billion years ago quite interesting to look at.
The story is all about the training montage–sort of–as Jessica attempts to get these characters in control of their newfound powers. Unfortunately the rings didn’t necessarily choose the perfect candidates, but it’s clear Humphries is making a statement on that seeing as Jessica and Simon weren’t perfect to start either. Still, it’s interesting to see these characters get this great power and yet have so many issues from anger, selfishness, and laziness. You can have great willpower, but not necessarily great heroism. As these characters train, Simon gets some much needed time as he comes to grips with the lack of his ring, but also his new found powers. He’s still useful it appears, and it’ll be interesting to see if he gets his ring back or stays in this state forever.

By my estimation 95% of the characters are either screaming or at least have their mouth open in this issue. Seriously, somebody close their mouths! This is of course an indication that there’s great excitement and emotion going on, but it’s also a bit much. With all the screaming happening you’d think these characters deserve other colored rings.
Aside from this, the issue does have a filler type feel and while it’s entertaining, it sure does bide its time to show these new Green Lanterns figure out how to use their rings. There isn’t a lot of training either, but maybe that’s due to the book having a lower page count.
Is It Good?
A gorgeous issue that packs a lot of punch in some cool training montages and a sweet moment for Simon.
