Walking Deadbeats: Kirkman sues AMC over hoarded TV show profits

The battle for survival just got real.

In what The Hollywood Reporter says could be the biggest profits suit in television history, comic creator turned television mogul Robert Kirkman, along with four other producers of the massively popular Walking Dead show, are set to raid the bunker of AMC, the cable channel that’s been boosted by the zombie drama.

If Kirkman and company are successful, it could end up costing AMC as much as $1 BILLION.

The suits claim breach of contract for not sharing profits the company raked in due to its “vertically integrated corporate structure.” In other words, since AMC both produces and airs The Walking Dead, they can cut costs by not having one arm pay the other, or at least not as much as it should. That takes a chunk out of Kirkman’s pocket, too.

This new case brought by Kirkman and three of the producers follows one from The Walking Dead‘s original showrunner, Frank Darabont, who was kicked off the program halfway through season two.

An AMC spokesperson told THR this kind of piling-on happens when something becomes hugely successful, and that the channel aims to “vigorously defend against this baseless and predictably opportunistic lawsuit.” They’ll probably need more than a barbed-wire baseball bat.
