PWG held its annual Battle of Los Angeles over Labor Day weekend. BOLA is the biggest independent wrestling tournament of the year. Past winners have included Kenny Omega, El Generico (Sami Zayn), and newest NXT arrival Adam Cole. A.J. Styles, Daniel Bryan, and Kevin Owens have all competed in the event. Ricochet was this year’s winner, defeating Jeff Cobb and Keith Lee in the three-way final.
Ricochet has become the first man to win PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles tournament twice — he also won the event in 2014, defeating current NXT Superstars Johnny Gargano and Roderick Strong.
The winner of the Battle of Los Angles receives a PWG Championship match. In the past, BOLA has been used to elevate its winners to the main event of the PWG scene. Ricochet’s win cements himself as one the most important figures in PWG history.
What’s next for Ricochet? He’s still under contract to Lucha Underground, where he competes as Prince Puma, and their arcane contracting system may keep him off US television for a long time while they try to put together a new season. Rumors have of course swirled for months that WWE is interested in the extraordinarily gifted grappler, and premiere wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer said in his most recent edition of Wrestling Observer: “In my mind, it’s time for him to go to WWE.”
