Starwars.com announced today J.J. Abrams is taking over on the writing and directing duties for Star Wars: Episode IX after Colin Trevorrow unexpectedly left the project.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had this to say:
With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.
This is great news for Disney and Star Wars fans alike since Abrams not only has a working relationship with the studio but because he’s proven he can pull off a Star Wars film fans will enjoy. Abrams is also known for completing films on time and under budget so here’s hoping Episode IX will hit theaters at the planned time of May 24th, 2019!
