Hoo boy, is it a good day for Hellboy fans everywhere. Earlier today the first image of actor David Harbour (Stranger Things) in costume as Hellboy was released. But the fun doesn’t stop there.
It’s been confirmed by actor Daniel Dae Kim that the rumors circulating about him and the upcoming film Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen are indeed true! Kim will playing the role of Major Ben Daimio, a member of the B.P.R.D. who’s Japanese-American. Earlier today he announced the news saying “I’m excited to confirm that I’ve officially join the cast of Hellboy.”
There’s been significant whitewashing backlash surrounding the initial casting of Ed Skrein to the role, and Kim is well aware of that. He issued a statement on the matter “Thank you for all the supportive tweets and comments, especially in light of the recent events surrounding its original casting. To that, I will only add that I applaud the producers and, in particular, Ed Skrein for championing the notion that Asian characters should be played by Asian or Asian American actors. He could not have addressed the issue more elegantly and I remain indebted to him for his strength of character.”
Daniel Dae Kim joins the acting team of David Harbour, Ian McShane and Milla Jovovich, all of whom have a strong background in the world of sci-fi fantasy. Director Neill Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) will be at the helm leading this incredibly talented cast.
