Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the first poster for the Tomb Raider reboot earlier today and if the poster is any indication, it appears as if the movie will draw inspiration from the rebooted video games. When Crystal Dynamics rebooted the franchise in 2013, the tone for the games was much grittier. Lara Croft was more of an action heroine than ever.
The poster for the movie features Oscar Winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft looking like the titular heroine does in the reboots. Instead of wearing shorts, Croft is holding a pickaxe. She is bruised and bandaged but also has a look of determination. Exactly like the reboots.
Whether the movie lives up to the critically acclaimed video games it is based on is a different matter. Video games and the movies have always had an interesting relationship. Video game fans hope that their favorites get made into movies. When the movies are made, they usually end up being nothing like the game, leaving hardcore fans upset and refusing to watch it at all. Meanwhile, casual movie goers prefer not to watch a “video game” movie.
A teaser was also released today, announcing a trailer for tomorrow. Tomb Raider is set to release on March 16, 2018.
