With Marvel turning a new leaf with the end of Secret Empire and the onset of Marvel Legacy, the books out this week feel a bit more special. Creators can now shift away from the last event and into the future stories we’ll be reading into Christmas. Mark Waid writes this issue with artist Jesus Saiz and delivers a primo team book feel, which I’m sure some folks have been dying for with characters seemingly always fighting each other.
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
Following the events of GENERATIONS comes the long-promised clash between the Avengers and the Champions! The countdown has started as the High Evolutionary, a twisted scientist determined to create a better world at all costs, sets the Earth on a collision course with destruction! The Avengers and the Champions are ready to meet this threat – but will their first cataclysmic clash deter them from Changing the World? PLUS: Includes 3 bonus MARVEL PRIMER PAGES! Story by Robbie Thompson and a TBA artist!
Why does this matter?
This book is a big warm hug for those who have loved and followed Champions as well as the Avengers Waid has been writing the last year or so. It also ends with an interesting three page ode to the Avengers written by Robbie Thompson and Daniel Acuna. Whether this is a promise of what is to come or not it’s a fun throwback look at the original Avengers lineup.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Trouble for this family.
This issue juggles a few things very well with Vision and his daughter’s relationship at the forefront of the character work. The issue opens with Spider-Man but it really gets going on the second page when it soon turns into a rescue mission. Vision attempts to tell his daughter what to do but she goes against his wishes to find more folks in a burning building. Later Falcon rubs Ms. Marvel the wrong way and Hercules treats the Champions a bit too much like children. It’s a reoccurring element of the issue that captures the unequal nature of the two teams. Waid seems to be saying the Champions deserve to be treated with as much respect as the Avengers and he makes a strong case that he’s right.
That’s shown via some great teamwork in this issue. After the fire is extinguished an asteroid is hurtling toward Earth and the heroes must all take part in slowing it down. There’s a brief science fiction explanation for the asteroid that’s fun, which transitions to the teams thinking fast and using their powers. Waid has every character use their power, some in interesting ways, some not (Cyclops does a fastball special ugh), but it’s fun to see how these characters have such varied powers.
Saiz draws a clean looking issue that pops with good use of color to bring out the fleshy skin tones and rippling muscles. The burning building is particularly cool looking with spot-on flames. In a scene where the Spider-Man characters use their webs, Saiz makes the webs look complex and interesting. Overall no complaints on the art side of things!
It can’t be perfect can it?

You could boil this issue down to three scenes and none of them really give you that “new” and “fresh” feeling. This isn’t the start of Marvel Legacy, but it’s great for fans of Waid’s two series. It is however just one big action sequence as it hammers the “we’re not JV we’re equal” argument. Solid arguments and action, but it gets a tad repetitive.
Is It Good?
Waid brings the Champions and Avengers together in a great team focused issue with underpinnings of animosity between the two teams. Fans of team books should pick this one up, especially if you’ve liked Champions, but it does leave you wondering where these “Marvel Legacy” elements are hiding.
