In the wake of the Disney/Fox mega-blockbuster deal, the company is making headlines once again — which should come as no surprise to longtime fans of fantasy/sci-fi epic Star Wars; The Last Jedi, eighth and latest film in the franchise, pulled in a near-record $45 million in Thursday previews (via Deadline), forcing out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 from the previous number two spot (the number one spot belonging to none other than Star Wars: The Force Awakens).
Although, according to Box Office Mojo contributor Brad Brevet the film is “pacing well behind Force Awakens with a performance closer to Rogue One leading up to release,” regarding IMDb page view data, The Last Jedi still is expected to become only the fourth domestic release ever to open at over $200 million at the box office (alongside The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Marvel’s The Avengers).
“The significance of this information is up for debate,” Brevet goes on to say, “as it would appear the film doesn’t hold the same curiosity level as Force Awakens, which is entirely understandable, but it also appears the film’s place within the Skywalker Saga versus the spin-off nature of Rogue One brings additional interest to Last Jedi.”
