Judging by the Cover – 12/20/17 new releases

Eric and Dog select the best covers from this week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in–a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Eric Cline and Science Editor Russ “Dog” Dobler’s attention this week.

Eric’s Picks:

Nightwing #35
Art by Yasmine Putri

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesThis issue marks the beginning of a new creative team’s run on the series, and their first cover is a standout. Yasmine Putri’s technical ability is solid, and the choice to tilt the action diagonally helps to catch your eye even before you analyze the content. The contrast between the highly detailed architecture and the simple but beautiful fog and searchlights is also great. Here’s hoping this run will have a lot of great covers like this one.

The Wild Storm #10
Art by Jon Davis-Hunt

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesOminous clouds? Check. Flock of black birds blurred mid-flight? Check. Coat flapping dramatically in the wind? Check. Gigantic buildings as far as you can see? Check. A gun? Check. One powerful image that brings all those elements together perfectly? Check.

Doctor Strange #383
Art by Michael Del Mundo

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesWhat can I say? That’s a beautiful tree. This cover’s use of white space could have easily crossed a line into being too excessive, but Michael Del Mundo’s composition ensures there’s just enough going on for it to work. The twisting of the bark is probably my favorite detail, and the image as a whole has a nice storybook feel to it.

Dog’s Picks:

Batman #37
Art by Mikel Janin

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesDid you know there’s a new book about Sigmund Freud out? It’s called “The Making of an Illusion,” and it’s highly critical of the guy who came up with the Oedipus Complex. It must be right, because neither of these women is named Martha.

Why does it look like the dudes are about to high five while the ladies sip red wine and drop barely veiled aspersions about each other’s apparel? What does that say about what DC Comics marketing thinks of us? Wait, what does that say about ME? Goddamnit, Freud!

X-Men Gold #18
Art by Ken Lashley

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesI’d imagine this is the kind of gimp bondage Bruce and Selina would keep. In case you didn’t realize this is a ’90s throwback series, we give you Nightcrawler–IN! CHAINS! And he’s so ripped, even his costume has abs! Kurt clearly doesn’t skip leg day, either. Hide the feet and Ken Lashley’s Rob Liefeld homage is complete! Radical!

The Mighty Thor #702
Art by Russell Dauterman

Judging by the Cover - 12/20/17 new releasesWhat a great contrast between vulnerability and power. Dying Jane Foster, still wielding Mjolnir, surrounded by light and color as she stands ready to kick cancer’s ass. I’d imagine a lot of struggling patients would like to feel this way, and now there’s an image to hone in on. All hail Dauterman!
