Add another piece of intriguing art from The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi besides bald Kylo Ren and proto-Porgs to the list: namely, a Sith Force ghost paying Luke Skywalker a visit.
The caption reads:
“We’ve seen dead Jedi come back as blue ghosts. Maybe Sith can come back. And maybe there’s some all powerful Sith that’s controlling whatever the dark side is. We did talk a lot about how the final battle frontier for Jedi might be in the spirit realm. So you have to have a bad-guy ghost.”
An interesting notion, though obviously one that conflicts with what has been established already about the Force afterlife in Star Wars canon, as Sith/Dark Jedi are regarded as imbalances/perversions of the Force’s capabilities. The irony is that the materialistic Sith seek everlasting life and yet can’t achieve that because of the way they chose to abuse the Force during their tenure in the corporeal world:
The ultimate goal of the Sith, yet they can never achieve it; it comes only through the release of self, not the exaltation of self. It comes through compassion, not greed. Love is the answer to the darkness. –Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith novelization
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson seems to agree with that notion, according to an interview with the LA Times:
But that would be really interesting considering the dark side is about self-preservation, trying to find immortality, and the notion that the light side actually got to it through selflessness — what would the dark side version of that look like?
Probably something like this, we’re willing to bet:

Would a Sith Force ghost go against the fundamental nature of the Force? Who is the mysterious phantasmal Sith looming behind Luke in the concept art above? Should this art have made it in some way, shape or form into the Star Wars: The Last Jedi film? Sound off in the comments.
