The finale does not disappoint.

The Hard Place has been a fast paced adventure about a bank robbery gone wrong. Recently released felon AJ was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was forced to drive the getaway car for the two robbers. Alex, a crime boss’s daughter, also got tangled up in the mix, providing the getaway car. Issue #5 is out this week; the finale of this exciting tale. How will it all end?

AJ is looking for some revenge!

After being shot in the head and left for dead, yeah, I think we can all agree that one might be pissed off and want revenge. The Hard Place #5 picks up with AJ sitting in the same muscle car that he wrecked taking his friend Sergei’s life. Now AJ will face his demons from the past as well as attempt to rescue Alex from the pair of thugs that have created this nightmare for both her and AJ.

This issue is intense from beginning to end. It plays out like the finale of an action movie and if you can overlook the questionable moments like AJ ramming the side of the robber’s car with Alex in the backseat, you’ll enjoy the book like I did. I can’t say much more without spoiling the end. It’s a car chase, so buckle up an enjoy the ride!

The Hard Place #5 Review

So Dave, is it good?

Yes, it is very good and exciting. I am a fan of Doug Wagner. There has been some misses along the way with The Hard Place, but in the end, I am satisfied with the endgame. There isn’t as much depth with the characters other than AJ, but that’s okay, since he’s the primary focus of the story to begin with. The villains are your basic, run-of-the-mill thugs that you hope get their ass whipped in the end and Alex is kind of a damsel in distress, but shows she has a strong side to her character. She isn’t a push over.

If you have read my other reviews of The Hard Place #1-4, you know what I’m going to say about the art — I still have the same feelings about it. I respect Nic Rummel’s style, but it isn’t really a style that I am a fan of. I like full, detailed panels, and Rummel leaves some panels open in the background, making the action look like it’s in front of a green screen. That said, I do like his character designs and the action is well crafted. Charlie Kirchoff has stayed consistent with his colors throughout this series. The colors are muted and dark, but fit the style of art. He does a nice job coloring the blank backgrounds, using various colors, so it all doesn’t look the same.

Overall, The Hard Place was an enjoyable tale of a bank robbery gone sour. The action was intense, the characters were likable enough that I was cheering for them, and the pacing of the story worked. If you are a fan of Doug Wagner, then The Hard Place will not disappoint.

Action packed and fun finale
Wagner makes you cheer for AJ
Kirchoff does well with his colors
a couple of moments are cliche
Nic Rummel's artwork is still hit and miss with me
