The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #29 Review

North and Henderson put together a delightful comic that also somehow weaves together social issues.

Squirrel Girl has gotten into her fair share of tussles, but taking on The Silver Surfer might be a fight she can’t win with her mighty fists.  Even with the assistance of Loki, current Sorcerer Supreme, the betailed heroine may have her paws full when dealing with The Power Cosmic.  Luckily, she has the friendship of Drax the Destroyer and Nancy to bolster her boisterous battle against the cosmic bro dude.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Let’s be honest, the best part of this comic is its general insanity.  Squirrel Girl’s life — on average — is bat-guano crazy, but throw in a planet of squirrels being extorted by a Silver Surfer look-alike and his bro-posse, Loki trying to be an effective sorcerer, Drax being his hilarious self, and the appearance of the weirdest Thor stand-in Marvel has ever thrown at the wall, and the wonderful ridiculousness flows from every panel.

What was that about Thors?  Oh yeah, we get some Thors. Beta Ray Bill (who looks like a horse) and, Hocky Hoof Hank (an actual horse).  With a few more flourishes, Loki summons a bevy of random heroes to fight alongside Squirrel Girl, ending quickly in my favorite line in the entire comic as the Silver Surfer slaps the heroes back to the worlds from whence they came.

While artist Erica Henderson’s style fits well with the Squirrel Girl aesthetic, a few panels turned out a bit odd.  Not enough to make it a thing, but there’s a full-body panel of Doreen that just doesn’t work.  The splash panels with the bevy of heroes are totally worth it, though.  Writer Ryan North, as usual, hits it out of the park with his portrayals of not only the heroes, but the surprise inclusion of a race of cat people bent on destroying Silver Surfer for his crimes against their people and the peoples of planets across the galaxy even though it was totally the fault of those fake surfer dudes.  Oops.

I am very much enjoying this galactic romp of Squirrel Girl’s.  North and Henderson put together a delightful comic every month and somehow weave together social issues along with discoveries of true friendship to create a character that is a hero everyone wants to be.
