Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, one of the most beloved children’s horror books of all time, will be adapted into a major motion picture from CBS Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will be produced and co-written by Oscar award winner Guillermo del Toro, who took home the award for best picture for The Shape of Water.
THR reports the movie will be shot in Toronto over the summer, and will be directed by Andre Ovredal.
Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark is fondly remembered as a genuinely scary book for children, largely because of the surreal, creepy artwork by Stephen Gammell. However, a few years ago, the publisher changed the artwork, replacing the horrifying imagery with cleaner, less frightening artwork by Brett Helquist. Due to fan outrage, however, the artwork was eventually changed back.
No word yet on when the film adaptation is set to release.
