Judging by the Cover – 5/16/18 new releases

Max and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in–a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Max Sisco and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Max’s Picks:

Infinity Countdown: Daredevil #1
Art by Clayton Crain

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

Perspective is everything and this cover capitalizes on interesting perspective and moody lighting to the extreme. I was between picking this one or the Daredevil main title cover this week, but in the end the extreme use of perspective and lighting had this one win over my heart and mind.

Batwoman #15
Art by Dan Panosian

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

I’m not reading Batwoman right now but Panosian’s covers have been making want to. Kate’s pose like some kind of Prince backup dancer as she breathes out bats is just so gorgeous. Everything about this cover is visually appealing as well as well-rendered, and Panosian has been killing it with every single one of his Batwoman covers.

Batman #47
Art by Amanda Conner

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

I love covers that have multiple versions of characters on them and this one definitely fits the bill. The idea of Bruce and Selina going to see a movie with a bunch of cosplayers is so cute and you can almost feel the buzzing of a midnight showing of a long awaited movie in this cover.

Eric’s Picks:

Gideon Falls #3
Art by Greg Smallwood

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

This Greg Smallwood cover is intense. We get the building teeming with supernatural energy, and those faces that are even more ominous. I love the composition here; everything is perfectly balanced. From the face mask to priest’s eyes, there’s a lot to focus on and love here.

Batwoman #15
Art by Rafael Grampa

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

There’s a lot of cool stuff going on here. I tend to think Kate Kane looks her best when artists render her in an exaggerated or surrealistic style, like Rafael Grampa does here. The points on Kate’s cowl are extreme, and her cape folds actually look like bat wings. The worn-down infrastructure around her is moody as well, and there’s a cool, almost goth atmosphere to the whole piece.

Infidel #3
Art by Aaron Campbell and Jose Villarrubia

Judging by the Cover - 5/16/18 new releases

I never thought a comic book cover would bring the word “trypophobia” to mind, but here we are. This image is honest-to-God viscerally upsetting, which is the best compliment I could possibly give it. I love everything about the composition, too. The straight line down the middle guides the eye to every horrifying detail.
