Star Wars: Poe Dameron continues to show unseen moments during The Force Awakens. Let that sink in. It also shows us Poe telling Rey and Finn all about his adventures which effectively reveals all these characters will be on the same page in episode 9.

Why does this matter?
This issue has a scene with Leia, more scenes with Rey, Finn, and Poe, and reveals a secret mission that helped the Rebels learn a bit more about Starkiller Base. Basically, this comic has everything a Star Wars fan would want!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Poor Leia.
This issue opens with the Millennium Falcon and Han Solo back when he was young and spry. Cut to Leia remembering the now-departed hero and we have ourselves a touching Solo moment right in time for the new film. This scene is a nice reminder of those we lost and the stakes in play, which helps when Poe continues to tell the tale of his strike on Takodana (when he saved Finn). This scene is more of a retelling of that moment, but it’s still cool to read Poe talk about the moment since it was such a great scene in The Force Awakens. This issue may not have any big reveals piecing things together, but it does have a key scene between Poe, Rey, and Leia post The Last Jedi. Technically that makes this issue the first new scenes ever to be seen post-The Last Jedi.
The rest of the book is focused on a covert mission involving a crazy idea to get close to Starkiller Base without being detected. It takes up 11 pages of the book and uses a few of the lesser known pilot characters. It’s a well written scene and gives readers a nice reminder that the Rebels aren’t only made up of Force powered heroes, but real people who love, live and fight for the cause. This sequence is punctuated by some fantastic renderings of Starkiller Base by Angel Unzueta. The angles at which Unzueta draws this behemoth of a planet/ship are exceptional and the sci-fi coolness of the moments is awe-inducing.
The rest of the book doesn’t look too bad either and Unzueta draws some spot-on photorealistic looks for Leia and the rest of the gang. The battle on Takodana looks fabulous too–I think the trees may be from a photograph–and the use of translucent lines helps convey the swooping nature of the X-Wings.

It can’t be perfect can it?
As I said above, this issue doesn’t reveal much in the way of Poe’s “unseen events” as the preview suggests. Compared to the last issue it’s positively missing a good Poe unseen moment! There is an unseen event here though so it’s not a total bust. The issue is made up of a collection of great scenes, but I was hoping for more in the way of new tidbits that add to The Force Awakens experience.
Is it good?
A fabulous issue that doesn’t have a bad scene or moment. This series continues to add value to the already great movies. Don’t miss this if you consider yourself a Star Wars expert.
