Jane Foster is certainly not dead, but her Thor is gone. Many, many millennia in the future, however, three sisters carry axe, hammer, and mace as the Goddesses of Thunder. Jumping through time in an extraordinarily convoluted way, they seek Thor. Not the All-Grandfather Thor, who they left sleeping on a table in their version of Asgard, but another, from the past. After jumping back to the site of Thor’s first battle on Midgard, the 26th century, and into the days of Throg, they finally find the Thor they seek, the one who inspired them to be who they are: Jane Foster.
Despite having recently lost her powers, as well as the hammer Mjolnir, Jane is an inspiration to these women who found the stories of not just Jane as Thor, but Foster herself, a blueprint for what feminist heroism is all about, especially when you wield the power of lightning. Despite her thin frame ravaged by her cancer, they see the strength she possesses. Thor was never about the hammer or the lightning. Thor was about the worthiness. Frigg, Ellisiv, and Atli are fanstruck over Foster and, after avoiding discussing events in her future (!!!), they give her one final gift. While I have been so endeared to Russell Dauterman’s work on The Mighty Thor, artist Jen Bartel’s final page of Jane and the goddesses of thunder is exactly what it needs to be: a glorious tease of what yet may come.
The second story is more about set-up for the upcoming Thor series than anything else, reminding us that Malkeith is a super bad guy and he wants to rule all the realms, especially now that Asgard is in pieces. He does, through astral projection, see the resurrection and return to Earth of the aforementioned Jane Foster, all the while plotting his eventual destruction of everything. Standard supervillain stuff illustrated well by Ramon Perez in a style very reminiscent of early Thor comics. While not my particular cup of tea, I get where things are going.
Writer Jason Aaron has done a phenomenal job writing Jane Foster’s Thor and I would love to see more of the goddesses of thunder, sooner rather than later. Any chance to have some more kick-ass women traipsing across the galaxy, especially if they’re carrying the intelligence of Jane Foster, the brashness of Thor Odinson, and the strength of Odin with them.
