While we’re only a week away from finally seeing the second standalone Star Wars film Solo: A Star Wars Story, easily the most anticipated Star Wars spinoff film is one focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan is one of the most enduringly popular characters from both the original and prequel trilogies, and actor Ewan McGregor has said on multiple occasions he’d gladly reprise the role. Nothing has been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, but a film is reportedly in the works, and an Obi-Wan movie seems like a question of when, not if.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the film will unsurprisingly be called Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story, following the naming convention of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. According to TMZ, the synopsis is as follows:
Obi-Wan is on Tatooine being an elusive hermit and stuff, but secretly watches over an infant Luke Skywalker, whom he delivered to his uncle, Owen. Tensions between the local farmers and a tribe of Sand People — headed by a ruthless war chief — eventually brings Obi outta hiding … and into Jedi kickass mode. Scene.
If that’s the case, this movie will take place in between Episodes III and IV — immediately after Revenge of the Sith and about 19 years before A New Hope.
The documents list Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) as the movie’s director.
Sounds like everything an Obi-Wan movie should be…as long as Ewan McGregor is the one playing him.
