Trailer Round-Up: Bumblebee, Spider-Man and more!

A number of exciting trailers dropped this week, including: Bumblebee, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Wreck-It-Ralph 2 and A Star Is Born.

This week is pretty much Movie Nerd Christmas: the major studios have been dropping trailers for anticipated films left and right! I’ve got a round-up of all the big trailers released so far this week below, along with my thoughts on them. From Transformers reboot(?) Bumblebee to Lady Gaga’s big-screen debut in A Star Is Born, there is a whole lot to discuss!

Bumblebee – December 21st, 2018

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.

I’m tempted to say that it appears the Transformers franchise is getting back to its roots with Bumblebee, but I don’t think even the first film in the franchise felt this grounded. Is it silly to call the trailer for a film about a giant car robot grounded? Perhaps, but you have to keep in mind that I am grading on a Transformers-sized curve here.

Judging just by this first teaser trailer, Bumblebee appears to be a lot more focused than its predecessors. Don’t get me wrong: I am positive that this film will contain insane robot battles and explosions, I just hope that all of the action is rooted in character and story this time around. With Micheal Bay (a man not known for his character or story work) departed from the franchise and director Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) taking the reigns, I am willing to give this film a shot.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – December 14th, 2018

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

This trailer is just dripping with cool. I think the most impressive aspect is the strikingly unique animation style. Sometimes it feels like all computer-generated animated films look the same, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has created a look all of its own.

Just from this trailer alone, it seems the film will be packed full of surprises, fun action and great character interactions. I am anxiously awaiting Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 but this film may now be the Spidey adventure I am most looking forward to. Miles Morales is instantly likable and an exciting protagonist for this film. I cannot wait to meet him.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 – November 21st, 2018

Six years after the events of “Wreck-It Ralph,” Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.

I really enjoyed the first Wreck-It Ralph. It was a creative and fun journey with extremely likable characters and a world I wanted to spend more time in. Maybe that is why this trailer was actually a disappointment for me. It is of course to early to know about the film itself, but this trailer at least seems a lot more concerned with advertising other brands than giving us more of Ralph, Venelope and the other characters many came to love in the original film.

Honestly, the movie that this trailer reminded me of was The Emoji Movie. Of course I am not suggesting that Wreck-It Ralph 2 will be similar in quality to that candy-coated trash fire, I am just talking about the surface similarities between the two films. I sincerely hope that this trailer is not reflective of the film itself, and when we get to see the movie for ourselves we see more Ralph and Venelope and less Amazon and Snapchat.

A Star Is Born – October 5th, 2018

A movie star helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Move over, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! My money is on A Star Is Born to be the movie musical event of the year. It’s a film full of debuts: featuring the directional debut of Bradley Cooper and the big-screen debut of Lady Gaga. Both look to be doing exquisite work, with Gaga in particular stunning me with the deep vulnerability she displays in this trailer. For a couple of minutes I totally forgot that I was watching the reigning queen of pop music and that is quite a feat!

The music sounds sensational, the story looks riveting and the actors seem to have palpable chemistry. For a devoted musical fanatic and someone who loves a good drama, this movie appears to be a dream come true!

What did you think of the trailers for Bumblebee, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Wreck-It Ralph 2 and A Star Is Born? Am I the only person who watched the A Star Is Born trailer 3 times in a row? Probably. Anyway, check back for all of the latest trailers as they debut – including the first trailer for this year’s Halloween reboot, coming on Friday!
