The Promised Neverland Recap – Chapter 90

Our heroes clash over their next possible moves.

Welcome to AiPT’s weekly The Promised Neverland recap column. As new chapters are released, I’ll be sharing my reactions to the series’s latest twists and turns. From bloodthirsty demons to elaborate battle strategies, writer Kaiu Shirai and artist Posuka Demizu always have something compelling up their sleeves. Be warned, though, that in order to elaborate on my thoughts I will be including SPOILERS.

This week is The Promised Neverland’s 90th chapter. It’s amazing how far the series has come since it began as a tale of young children trying to escape from their orphanage home. Now, as the series nears its first centennial mark, Emma and her comrades find themselves in one of the most dangerous situations they’ve braved thus far. Our heroes are in the middle of their revolt at Goldy Pond, and while they’ve managed to take down most of their demon opponents, there’s still one left in their way: Leuvis. Even though he’s been blinded, he’s still a deadly threat.

Who could blame them for doubting themselves?

This chapter is essentially a “good guys regroup and have a pep talk” chapter. Emma and the Nameless Geezer argue over what the smartest strategy would be, with Emma pushing to stay and fight rather than run away. The characters also hint at Lucas’s final contingency plan, which hasn’t been revealed yet but has my interest. As well-written as this chapter is, I can’t help but hope that Shirai and Demizu speed things up. The final battle with Leuvis has been dragging on for a while, and I’m ready for it to end soon.

At least we get to see more of Leuvis looking badass.

With that said, Leuvis is easily the best part of his chapter. Watching him waltz around and tear down buildings is a lot of fun. His design is just excellent, with the long flowing coat and sleeves that naturally amp up the sense of drama. Even when Leuvis can’t see, his sheer destructive power and menacing confidence make him terrifying to behold. Demizu’s most striking panels in this chapter are all ones depicting Leuvis. As much as I’m ready for the plot to move on to the next arc, I am enjoying all the shots of Leuvis on the offense.

Overall, this is a fairly uneventful chapter. The protagonists’ arguments are very similar to ones they’ve had in previous chapters, and Leuvis isn’t any closer to death than he was last week. Thankfully, we at least get Demizu’s usual fantastic artwork as well as some indications that the Nameless Geezer will be opening up more soon. The last several chapters have all felt like the beginning of the end of this arc, but hopefully next week’s will actually shake things up in a big way.

That’s all for this chapter! Stay tuned for more recaps as The Promised Neverland updates every week.
