DC to relaunch The Green Lantern by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp with a focus on Hal Jordan as a space cop

Hal Jordan once again finds the spotlight in the upcoming series The Green Lantern.

Today in an interview with IGN, DC Comics revealed that The Green Lantern comic series will be relaunched this November, with legendary writer Grant Morrison and veteran artist Liam Sharp at the helm. The aim of the series is to take Hal Jordan back to his roots of being a space cop, patrolling his sector and dealing with the smaller issues a Green Lantern faces when they aren’t saving the universe from oblivion.

Morrison had this to say on the premise of the series: “Instead of the big, epic, 12-part stories, we’re focusing down on the everyday life of a space cop. Basically, it’s no more apocalypse-ending storylines. The basic concept is that Hal Jordan is like a space cop that patrols a sector of the universe where anything can happen. We’ve made it more like a police procedural.”

We’ve seen DC take this approach to the Green Lantern character more than once in the past, with mixed success. Before Geoff Johns’ complete rebuild of the Green Lantern mythos, Kyle Rayner was out in the dark reaches of the universe playing space cop. Rayner went up against a slew of small time criminals, as well as major crime syndicates like Black Circle, led by Amon Sur, the son of Hal’s predecessor, Abin Sur.

After Geoff Johns’ famous Rebirth event, Hal Jordan stayed close to home and patrolled Earth with the Justice League and his fellow human Green Lanterns. That of course didn’t last long, with Recharge, Blackest Night and Brightest Day events thrusting Green Lanterns onto the main stage of DC Comics. Since that time, writers like Robert Venditti have continued the epic scope of Green Lantern’s place in the DC Universe.

The preview images show us that this time around Hal is starting off on Earth and comes across the crashed spaceship of a fellow Corpsman. Just like when Hal first encountered the Green Lantern Corps, this Corpsman is fatally injured. Where things diverge is this time around Hal isn’t inheriting the most powerful weapon in the universe — instead, he’s inheriting the responsibility of hunting down the three criminals who were aboard the ship headed to trial, which is the first arc of the relaunch.

During their conversation with IGN, Morrison and Sharp expressed their love for Hal’s early adventures and how they wanted their run to have a similar feel, when things were new and unexpected. This means we shouldn’t expect to see many familiar faces, instead we should encounter completely new Green Lanterns or Lanterns who haven’t been seen in many, many years. For Guy Gardner fans like yours truly, this means steeling yourself for disappointment, as this story is all about Hal. No other earthlings allowed.

“We’re doing Hal Jordan where, you know he’s a good cop, but is he really a good guy? And we’re looking into his relationships and how he deals with people. And also the fact that, if you’ve got a job as a space cop, it’s hard to be stuck on the planet Earth. He has other lives on other planets. We’re gonna be looking into a lot of things that I don’t think we’ve seen a lot with Hal Jordan before.”

Morrison certainly appears ready to dig into Hal’s character. We are too.
