Judging by the Cover – 7/25/18 new releases

Trevor and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Trevor Richardson and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Trevor’s Picks:

Wonder Woman #51
Cover art by Stanley Lau

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

My favorite detail about Stanley Lau’s cover is the cold breath streaming out of Diana’s mouth. It’s an extra detail that drives the already life-like cover over the edge into realism. I also love the snow and the reflective surface of the metal on Diana’s armor, as well as the way her cape blows back in the wind. I don’t always love covers that look realistic, but there are enough cool details here to draw me in to this one.

Justice League Dark #1
Cover art by Greg Capullo & Jonathan Glapion

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

This cover is classic Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion character work. The page isn’t overwhelmed with lines, but there is a ton of texture going on with Swamp Thing’s body and Man-Bat’s fur. Man-Bat’s pose is also evocative of the New 52 Batman #6 cover Capullo did of the owl-ified Batman, which remains one of my favorite covers ever. The hood added to Diana’s costume does just enough to make her start to fit into this cabal of creatures and magicians.

Venom #4
Cover art by Ryan Stegman

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

“To web sling or not to web sling?” asks Ryan Stegman’s cover for Venom #4. My favorite thing about Hamlet-inspired covers is that I can never really take them seriously. This one in particular features that grimace from the little symbiote head that injects a moody cover with just enough humor to make me excited to read the new issue. This cover, just like the series, is dark and broody but still manages to feel fun.

Eric’s Picks:

Marvel 2-In-One #8
Cover art by Jay Anacleto

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

I love American Gothic parodies, so this cover immediately speaks to me. Jay Anacleto’s line-work is solid all around, but my favorite detail is the expression on Johnny Storm’s face. I also love the fact that this homage actually plays with the building in the background, not just the pair of characters in the foreground. This image is just fun overall, and it fits Ben and Johnny very well.

Descender #32
Cover art by Dustin Nguyen

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

The sheer sparseness in this cover’s upper half is stunning. By contrasting the beautiful watercolor cosmos of the bottom half with all the white space up top, Dustin Nguyen creates the sense that Tim-21 has truly drifted out of reach. I’ve selected covers from Descender for Judging by the Cover several times, and the series more than makes the cut with its final issue.

A Walk Through Hell #3
Cover art by Andy Clarke

Judging by the Cover - 7/25/18 new releases

Wow. I’ve heard of putting your foot in your mouth, but this is next level. I love skeleton imagery in general (who doesn’t?), and the green tints and text overlays further enhance the eerie vibes. Andy Clarke is definitely grabbing my attention with this cover.
