Judging by the Cover – 8/8/18 new releases

David and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

David’s Picks:

The Sandman Universe #1
Cover art by Dave McKean

Sandman is back this week and McKean is doing a cover of his own. The man killed it on the plethora of covers he did for the original series and he hasn’t skipped a beat. Note how there is a mixed media thing going on with the cloth and cutouts. Just sit and look at this for more than a few minutes and you’ll see the layering and hidden beauty. Excellent stuff.

The Sandman Universe #1
Cover art by Jim Lee

Jim Lee is known for his superhero art, but this is quite a different look for him. It suits the Vertigo label and is striking in how it uses the light. Note the whisps of light around the hand or the streaks of hair. It’s excellent stuff.

The Sandman Universe #1
Cover art by David Mack

What an excellent variant cover. The dreamlike quality is aided by the watercolor while the gold pieces seem to add a bit of structure so that Dream isn’t just an idea.

Eric’s Picks:

The Sandman Universe #1
Cover art by Dave McKean

Where to start with this cover? The intensity of the focal character’s gaze? The sheer variety of textures on display? The detail on all the fabric folds? The evocative wings? The bold and beautiful colors? The positioning of the hands in the bottom left corner? All of it?

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #35
Cover art by Erica Henderson

I love the sheer sense of fun to this cover. Not only do we have Squirrel Girl herself, but we get Spider-Man charging forward as well as a bewildered Kraven. Even more charming are all the animals. The colors here are beautiful too, and the purples and blues pop really well against the black background. With all that said, I think my favorite detail here is the silly expression on the bear’s face.

The Sandman Universe #1
Cover art by P. Craig Russell

I love the uber thin line-work here. It’s simple, but there are still nice little details such as the draping of Morpheus’s robe down the stairs. The composition is very well-balanced as well. The decision to render the building in the background as a single mass of color rather than as a fully detailed structure helps prevent the image from becoming too busy. This cover is just lovely to look at all around.
