Overwatch League: Following 0-40 season, Shanghai Dragons cut nearly their entire roster

The announcement everyone expected is here.

Following a brutal 0-40 inaugural season in the Overwatch League, the Shanghai Dragons have announced the release of the majority of their roster.

The announcements came via the Shanghai Dragons’ Twitter account.

Here’s a full breakdown of the players cut and the positions they played:

  • Cheng “Altering” Yage, Support
  • Xu “Freefeel” Peixuan, Support
  • Chen “Fiveking” Zhaoyu, Support,
  • Jing “Roshan” Wenhao, Tank
  • Liu “Xushu” Junjie, Flex
  • Chon “Ado” Gi-hyeon, DPS
  • He “Sky” Junjian, Support
  • Kim “Daemin” Dae-min, DPS

Following the Tweet announcing the release of the eight players, the Dragons sent another Tweet which stated, “You will always be part of the Dragons Family. We wish you best of luck in your future endeavors.”

Also released from their contracts with the team were head coach Son “Kong” Jun-Young and analyst Jia “Nai8” Jia. The Dragons had this to say on the release of Kong and Nai8, “The entire SHD crew thank you for your dedications and contributions throughout the first season of the Overwatch League. We wish both of you best of luck in your next adventure!”

Both announcements were met with an outpouring of support from fans on Twitter, as well as an ample amount of excitement and optimism for season 2. Despite the teams poor performance, they had an extremely large following of passionate and loyal fans.

Shanghai finds themselves in a difficult position this off season. With the announcement a new Chinese based team in Guangzhou, the competition for talent will be fierce. The window to sign new players isn’t long, Sep. 9 to Oct. 7 and it’s doubtful their first season performance will help them recruit top talent over Guangzhou.
