WWE Superstar Triple H gifts London Spitfire a custom WWE Championship belt

It’s all about the game, and how you play it!

WWE Superstar Triple H announced on Twitter today that he was awarding the most prestigious title in sports entertainment, the WWE Championship, to the Overwatch League’s inaugural season’s champions, the London Spitfire.

For those of you who might be wondering why WWE of all companies would be congratulating and bestowing a gift upon the Overwatch League champions. Allow me to shine a light.

Triple H is known for his habit of gifting customized WWE Championship belts to championship teams across an array of sports. The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Capitals, last years Superbowl and Stanley Cup champions respectively, both received straps this year.

So while Overwatch isn’t one of the big four traditional sports in America, it’s without question become one of the biggest esports in the world. Not only that, but WWE and esports have a history. More specifically, WWE and Cloud9 have a history.

The London Spitfire live under the umbrella of Cloud9, an esports organization, and both groups are owned by Jack Etienne. Cloud9 is one of the biggest esports organization in the world and competes in over eight major game franchises. In Oct. 2017 WWE invested $25 million dollars in Cloud9, so it goes without saying that Triple H must be pleased to see his investment headed in the right direction.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque is a 14-time WWE world heavyweight champion, a semi-active WWE Superstar and the Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative. He will once again be stepping into the ring against The Undertaker at the upcoming WWE Super Show-Down pay-per-view, on Oct. 6 in Melbourne Australia.

At this time there’s no official start date for Overwatch League’s second season. We know the season is slated to begin sometime in 2019 and eight new teams will be joining the existing twelve teams that participated in the inaugural season of Overwatch League.
