Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media & Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Klaus and the Crying Snowman #1

BOOM! Studios
I like how this cover is going all in with the sword and sorcery vibes, but still manages a touch of the festive Christmas spirit via the snowman and the reindeer shield. Grant Morrison and Dan Mora’s take on Santa has been exciting since day one, but even if you know nothing about them this cover is selling you hard on the series. Giant dragon, war ax, snowman sidekick? Sign me up.

I love the imaginative nature of this cover. A strange man in the foreground, a giant bunny in the background. Knickknacks and weirdness abound. How can you not love this cover?
The Life Of Captain Marvel #5

I’ve enjoyed this series immensely and this cover does well to capture the relief and joy of Carol Danvers after all the revelations she’s discovered. The use of the star is quite nice, emblazoning the sky with her emotion, and her pose is heroic, realistic-looking, and positive. The use of the sash to draw your eye looping around is quite nice, too.

I love Jae Lee. Virtually everything he does he knocks out of the park, and this cover is no exception. His style is especially suited to characters and subject matter enshrouded in shadows, so he’s an awesome fit for T’Challa’s all black suit and the group of panthers in the background. I love how strategically placed the few drops of color here are. You’ve got the yellow of T’Challa’s and the panthers’ eyes, making them look even more intimidating than already are. I also love the attention to the claws on T’Challa’s gloves. Sharp and deadly, they’re fantastically drawn.

W. Scott Forbes’ paintings always look lovely, and this one is no exception. I love the softness of the coloration, with the nice contrast between the lighter and darker values. There’s a smooth texture to the image that’s pleasing to the eye. The diagonal set-up of the composition is also effective; both Bobby and Sinister get their fair share of the spotlight without encroaching on the other’s space. This is a well-thought out cover all around.
Dead Man Logan #2

Marvel Comics
Seeing Mysterio rendered in Shalvey’s intense style is a fun change of pace. The claw marks across the fishbowl helmet exposing the eyes are fantastic. The sharp contrasts between the colors in this cover are also awesome. The deep red is stunning against the surrounding whites and grays, and it immediately conveys danger to boot.
