The first trailer for the upcoming reboot of Child’s Play is here.
The upcoming slasher remake is being directed by Lars Klevberg and written by Tyler Burton Smith. It shares the same name as the original 1988 film, in which a serial killer, Charles Lee Ray, is fatally injured and transfers his soul into the body of a Good Guy doll. A widower gifts the doll to her young son, who has no idea his new toy is possessed by the spirit of a murderer.
Plot details for the reboot aren’t available just yet beyond this brief synopsis, “A mother gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature.” It’s been reported that the film will feature a group of kids, similar to Stranger Things, and a modern-day hi-tech version of the Good Guy Doll. The trailer supports the hi-tech rumors, but you’ll have to decide on the rest for yourselves.

The trailer begins with an advertisement playing in the background for a new hi-tech “best friend”, as the assembly of a mechanical doll is briefly show, before moving over to the film’s protagonist Andy (Gabriel Bateman), opening a present from his mother Karen (Aubrey Plaza) — which is of course a Buddi doll, aka Chucky. The doll performs a scan of Andy’s face and from there things quickly take a sinister turn. We catch quick glimpses of Chucky within shadows, and then the bodies and blood start piling up. Chucky is never fully revealed during the trailer but they do a nice job making him extremely sinister.
Orion Films is taking the marketing for the film pretty seriously. They’ve set up a fake promo site where you can pre-order your very own Buddi doll, and learn about it’s many technical capabilities, such as cloud-backed voice recognition, 20 cameras and sensors and of course, WiFi. There’s even a YouTube video up from the doll’s fictional manufacturer, Kaslan Corporation, in which the CEO talks about a “new family product that will change the landscape of artificial intelligence forever.”
Child’s Play is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 21, 2019.
