John Lasseter had a long history with Walt Disney Animation Studios before November 2017. His body of work helped to gross billions of dollars thanks to animated classics such as Toy Story 3 and Frozen. Along with Disney, Lasseter has made significant contributions to Lucasfilm and Pixar.
In November of 2017, Lasseter took a leave of absence from from Disney/Pixar. Lasseter acknowledged sexual misconduct allegations, describing them as “missteps” in a memo to his staff. The allegations against Lasseter included unwanted kissing, fondling, and groping.
After leaving Disney, Lasseter was hired to head Skydance Animation in January 2019. Skydance will produce animated films with Paramount Animation, with the first film Luck to be released in March of 2021.The film is to be directed by Alessandro Carloni who has no ties to the Lasseter allegations.
Emma Thompson who had signed on to be part of the voice cast left production upon the hiring of Lasseter. In a letter shared with the Los Angeles Times, Thompson questioned why Skydance would hire Lasseter considering his history of inappropriate behavior. She also wondered how any woman could work for Lasseter since he is now contracted to act professionally. (An email was set to staff at Skydance with the noting Lasseter was “contractually obligated to act professionally.”)
Currently, no other cast has been announced for the film.
