Women will main event WWE WrestleMania for the first time ever this year

The Women’s Evolution has come a long way.

For the first time in history, a women’s match will main event WrestleMania. WWE announced the news on WWE.com this morning.

Ronda Rousey, current Raw Women’s Champion, will defend her title against SmackDown Live!‘s Becky Lynch, this year’s Royal Rumble winner and Sports Illustrated Wrestler of the Year,  and Charlotte Flair, seven time Women’s Champion.

The women’s division, formerly known as the Divas division, has come a long way in WWE. The division once known for 30 second matches and titillating outfits reached a tipping point in 2015, when yet another throwaway women’s match sparked the hashtag #GiveDivasAChance, which trended for three days. That set in motion the so-called “Women’s Evolution,” which retired the Divas moniker and presented a shift to WWE treating their female talent exactly the same as the males.

WWE produced their first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view event, Evolution, in October 2018.

It does remain to be seen if this means that the match will truly go on last, as WWE has a habit of calling multiple matches on the WrestleMania card “main events,” but considering this press release, it seems that they are making a bigger deal out of it than usual. It appears as if this match will close the show, which will be a historic moment in wrestling history.

Congratulations to Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey, and kudos to WWE for making this groundbreaking decision.
