Judging by the Cover – 5/29/19 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Event Coordinator JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline‘s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #1
Cover art by Greg Capullo

DC Comics

This is the last Batman story from the dynamic duo of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo. So yeah, you’re going to need to read this. If the super-size book with 56 pages isn’t enough to convince you, then maybe a badass cover of Batman walking around with Joker’s head in a lantern will be.

Code #12
Cover art by Matias Bergara

Judging by the Cover - 5/29/19 new releases

BOOM! Studios

Every time I see a new cover for this book I want to read it. This time it really hooked me, so I gave in and ordered the trade. If that’s not a compliment to Matias Bergara, I’m not sure what is. Some of his covers are elaborate landscapes, and others are simple like this issue. One thing that’s consistent across the board with his Coda covers is the aura of mystery. It beckons you to come a little closer, and in this case, find out what secrets and spells are hidden inside this journal.

Thor #13
Cover art by Michael del Mundo

Judging by the Cover - 5/29/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

That axe makes Thor’s hammer look like a toy. His uncle, the God of Fear, is looking a bit like a no-nonsense badass. The gold-yellow aura coming off the axe swing, axe, and animal skin cloak draws the reader’s eyes right in to the center of the page. I particularly enjoy the dark elf masks surrounding the warrior in the center, and how the illumination from the axe slowly fads as you climb up the wall of masks.

Eric’s Picks:

Age of X-Man: Extremists #4
Cover art by Rahzzah

Judging by the Cover - 5/29/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

I always dig when comics art manages to incorporate older panels and images effectively, which is exactly what Rahzzah does here. Northstar’s pained look and thoughts of his past are all the more moving because we’re seeing them exactly as they were first drawn. It really sells the history of the character, which is one of the more interesting ones X-Men has to offer. Of all the characters dealing with their memory loss during the Age of X-Man, Jean-Paul’s struggle is particularly meaningful.

Daredevil #6
Cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco

Judging by the Cover - 5/29/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

The composition and design for this cover are on-point. The colors work really well, with the red and white both popping effectively. There’s a nice graphic feel to the circles representing Matt’s powers, and the placement of the text coming off of his cane is perfect. All in all, this piece is really well-thought-out.

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark #6
Variant cover art by Craig Cermak

Judging by the Cover - 5/29/19 new releases

Dynamite Comics

I love Elvira, and I’ve loved getting to see so many campy covers for her comics in the last several months. This latest one is particularly cool. That expression and posture? Totally Elvira. The likeness? Very good. Watching her play chess against a skeleton opponent, possibly the Grim Reaper? Also awesome.
