Happy Memorial Day, everyone! Whether you are getting ready for the big cookout, recovering from one, or dreading going back to work tomorrow, the end of May is just around the corner. We are about to hit the midpoint of the year and there are some interesting movies coming out in June. Here is a list of what we are looking forward to.
June 7th
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nationwide): The trailers have alternated between pretty cool and pretty awful and Jennifer Lawrence looks like she is ready to get out. Still, it is based on an iconic story and it is the last movie with the current cast. Plus, with Marvel and Disney waiting in the wings, this is arguably the most important X-Men movie in years.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Nationwide): Have you ever wondered what Toy Story would be like if it were animals instead of toys? You are not alone as original became one of the highest grossing movies of all time. The inevitable sequel is here and the trailers look pretty funny.
Late Night (Nationwide): Talk about a rough spot. Opening against two potential blockbusters is not the ideal spot for a little comedy – drama about a long time talk show host who needs to combat decreasing ratings. Written by Mindy Kaling and including an impressive cast that includes Kaling, Emma Thompson, and John Lithgow, the movie looks strong on paper. But will anyone notice it?
June 14th
Men in Black: International (Nationwide): Men in Black is one of the most popular franchises of all time. Along with the movies, there was an animated series, video games, and radio hits. MIB 3 was almost a decade ago and another film was about due. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson showed great chemistry in Thor: Ragnarok and MIB: International looks to be just as fun.
The Dead Don’t Die (Nationwide): This will probably be one of the most polarizing films of the year. Some (hipsters and film snobs) will probably love it, casual movie goers may not get it – and for good reason. Director Jim Jarmusch is not the most accessible filmmaker and his films are very hit and miss. His films tend to eschew clear plot progression while his storytelling can get downright boring. Still, the film’s strong cast may carry it.
Shaft (Nationwide): The Shaft franchise has never been about nuanced storytelling. The titular character is a badass that deals with issues and makes the ladies love him along the way. The latest entry in the series introduces another generation to the story. It also look to be more of an action comedy than a straight action movie.
June 17th
Under the Silver Lake (Limited): This one is personal. I know I can stream David Robert Mitchell’s sophomore effort. And the film’s mystery looks fun and well shot. This is the third time (at least) I have tried to see the movie in theaters. I refuse to see it any other way.
June 21st
Toy Story 4 (Nationwide): The third one gave fans the perfect ending. There did not seem any point in continuing the series. still, it is hard to imagine a Toy Story movie not delivering and the addition of Tony Hale is a great one. We may not have asked for it, but the next part in the franchise looks fun.
Child’s Play (Nationwide): Speaking of not asking for something. Even at their best, the original Child’s Play movies are on a different tier than Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween. More silly than funny and more corny than scary, the franchise continued on despite not seeming to have any serious fans. Maybe a reboot can fix that.
Anna (Nationwide): Director Luc Besson knows how to direct a good action movie. Anna looks promising as long as it remains focused. If the movie is more Atomic Blonde than it is Red Sparrow, audiences should be happy.
June 28th
Annabelle Comes Home (Nationwide): The Conjuring films keeps chugging along. Based on the trailer, the movie looks to have the requisite number of loud noises and jump scares. In this one it looks like the evil has come to the Warrens instead of the other way around. Looks like any other movie in the franchise, but when has that stopped people from going?
Yesterday (Nationwide): Initially, the film does not sound that great. A guy wakes up in a world where no one remembers The Beatles. He becomes famous by taking credit for their songs. However, having director Danny Boyle on board makes things a little more appealing. Throw in the writer of the best romantic comedy of all time, Love Actually and I’m sold.
