Dash Shaw brought new elements to the world of Clue in the first issue of Clue: Candlestick. The weapons now have a rich history behind them to match up with the usual suspects.  Colonel Mustard was shot and killed at the dinner table. But who could have done it? There are accusations, but nothing has been solved and we aren’t even close to having a suspect. By the end of the first book, another murder occurred, but you’re just gonna have to shell out some dough to see who else was killed. The two issues have clues that help you solve the murder, so I’m not going to go into great detail of the plot. You’re going to have to trust me and read the books.

What’s the book about?

Clue: Candlestick #2 dives into the lovely and devilish Miss Scarlett’s background. Her beauty is astounding and there are numerous artists, sculptors, and photographers who want to create memories of her and in some cases with her. Mr. Boddy also falls under her spell and amasses a collection of the sultry vixen. His wife questions his collection and is suspiciously murdered. Foul play is afoot at all corners! If you read the last issue, then you know of the second death. So who is the murderer? Is it just one person or a collaboration? Shaw has done a fantastic job dealing out clues but also making it a tough case to crack. One issue to go! Can you figure out the killer before he/she is revealed? I’m going to have to backtrack myself and see what I can discover.

Clue: Candlestick #2 review

The Good

Shaw delivers a couple more puzzles for the reader to solve. He gives instructions on how to solve them, but it’s up to you to do the legwork. I like this personal touch he has added to the comic. It gets the reader involved and hands you the detective hat and magnifying glass. As in the first issue, his artwork is superb. The use of colors coinciding with the characters is sharp and imaginative. I absolutely dig the story of Miss Scarlett and the circumstances that lead her to Mr. Boddy’s mansion. Shaw’s storytelling is entertaining and contains just the right amount of intrigue.

The Bad

There are only three issues of this book. I can’t lie and say that I am not nervous how this is going to end. The first issue focused a great deal on Col. Mustard. This issue focuses a lot on Miss Scarlett. I fear that the third issue is going to rush and bring it all to an abrupt end without the depth of the first two issues. I would have been all in for a twelve-issue series detailing all the characters and their background. But I will have faith that Shaw will finish his narrative as strongly as the previous two chapters.

The Ugly

Men can be obnoxious animals. We all know this. Miss Scarlett has to endure some unwanted advances, but also deals out her own brand of justice.

The Verdict

Clue: Candlestick is a three issue mini-series that is well worth the money if you are a Clue fan or just a fan of mystery in general. Shaw has crafted a murder mystery for the modern age. It would be a crime to pass this series up and not give it the justice it deserves.

Outstanding artwork and use of colors.
Shaw goes deep into the characters backgrounds and makes you feel for them outside of just moving their pawns on the board
Shaw gives the reader clues to solve the mystery before it is revealed. Can you solve it first?
Only three issues! I want more!
