Adding more flavor to success: The best movies based on the works of Truman Capote

Some must see movies of Truman Capote.

June is Pride Month and AiPT! has celebrated with a series of articles and podcasts. Amazon Prime Video is celebrating Pride month with a page dedicated to LGBTQ+ films. Along with shows and familiar movies (including some of the movies listed below), Amazon is featuring Pride exclusives.

Truman Capote remained in the public eye for most of his adult life. The author transcended the writing world and became a nationwide celebrity based on his eccentric character, his outlandish dress style, and his tendency to stretch the truth. Capote was also an openly gay man in a time when it was much less acceptable than it is today. In honor of Pride Month, here are the best movies involving Truman Capote and his works.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s may be Capote’s most well known film adaptation. From “Moon River” to Holly Golightly’s little black dress, the movie is a series of iconic moments. Even if someone were to take away the dress and the music, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still a fantastic love story with some endearing characters. It may only be loosely based on Capote’s story, but still captures the heart and spirit of the novella.

In Cold Blood (1967)

A predecessor to the popular true crime podcasts and docudramas of today, In Cold Blood is a frightening look at how two men murdered a Kansas family of four. The men were eventually captured by the police and executed. Director Richard Brooks wanted the movie to be as realistic as possible. This leads to a film that was equal parts chilling and informative. Whether you are a fan of true crime, Capote, or movies, this is a must see.

Capote (2005)

In Cold Blood is arguably Capote’s best work. It is also the last full book he ever finished. (He did release short stories after and a book was published posthumously.) Capote details the toll the research and the writing of the book had on the author. The great story is buoyed by an award winning performance from the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. This is a movie you should go out of your way to see.
